We attended the Healthy Tower Hamlets launch event

On the 22nd January, Healthwatch Tower Hamlets attended the Tower Hamlets Health Champions Summit to see the launch of the new Healthy Tower Hamlets Campaign!

Introductions

The event began with a warm welcome from members of the local council, including a great introduction from Somen Banerjee, Director of Public Health for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

We were then introduced to the brand-new Healthy Tower Hamlets campaign by Georgia Chimbani, local Director of Health and Adult Social Care and Joanne Ferry, local Public Health Programme Lead.

The campaign aims to promote ways to stay healthy and live longer, hoping to improve the health and wellbeing of the Borough’s most underserved communities.

Key Speakers

With the event now in full swing, we listened to a series of speakers talk about different ways in which we could implement small changes in our daily routines to live healthier lives.  One notable speaker was Tony Kelly, Diabetes UK Community Champion.

Tony spoke about his own personal experience having diabetes and how changes he made to his own lifestyle meant he has never needed to take medication for his condition.

Through his commitment to staying fit through Zumba and eating healthily, he has also avoided developing any complications associated with Type 2 diabetes.

His passion to motivate others to change their lifestyle for the better was truly inspiring!

Our volunteers really enjoyed speaking with other local health champions about the important work we do at Healthwatch Tower Hamlets. It was fantastic to learn more about how other local organisations are making an impact on the health of our local communities as well.

After a morning spent discussing small ways we can live healthier, we enjoyed a delicious, balanced meal for lunch – the perfect ending to an even better event.
